Become a Grand Giver

The Grand Givers Society is a group of individuals or businesses who make an annual donation of a grand ($1,000) or more to provide families a way to stay together when their child is receiving medical treatment for a life-threatening illness. Ronald McDonald House families are asked to make a $10 per night donation toward their stay, but the actual cost to provide our special brand of hospitality for families is $55 per night. No family is ever turned away due to their inability to make a donation.

As a Grand Giver Society donor, you have a tremendous power in working together with other like-minded individuals so a child can not only get access to the medical services they need, but also have their parents close by to give them hugs, kisses, and love. Families find strength from each other, from RMHC staff and volunteers. Your contribution will make it possible for more families to find strength so their child can be strong enough to heal. There is strength in numbers.

As a Grand Giver Society donor, you are an intregal part of our mission and allow us to provide hope, comfort, caring and unique programs to families when they need it most.

How it Works

As a Grand Giver, you may choose to contribute "a grand" ($1,000) or more annually to the Share A Night Fund. It costs $55 per night to provide our special brand of hospitality to one family for one night. Ronald McDonald House families are asked to make a $10 per night donation toward their stay, however more than half of the families are unable to pay that nominal amount. No family is ever turned away due to their inability to make a donation.

What Your Gift Will Do For Families

  • $1,000 provides 18 nights of stay at the House for families of critically-ill children receiving care at area hospitals.
  • $2,500 provides 45 nights of stay (3 families staying our average of 15 nights each)
  • $5,000 operates the Ronald McDonald House (26 families) and the Ronald McDonald Family Room (average 75 visitors per day) for 3 and a half days.

Your Benefits as a Member

As a member of the Grand Giver Society, your benefits include:

  • Invitation to RMHC Annual Meeting and Scholarship Banquet
  • Listing in the RMHC Annual Report
  • Listing in a Thank You ad in the Chattanooga Times Free Press
  • Inclusion on the RMHC website

Planned Giving and the Arch Society

Planned giving is finding ways to make charitable gifts now or after your lifetime while enjoying financial benefits for yourself.

Planned gifts are sometimes referred to as “stop-and-think” gifts because they require some planning and, often, help from your professional advisors. Unlike cash donations, they are typically made from assets in your estate rather than from disposable income, and come to fruition upon your death. A misconception is that planned giving is only for the “wealthy.” The truth is, even people of modest means can make a difference through planned giving.

There are almost as many variations on ways to make a donation as there are needs to be met. Explore this section to discover new ways to make a gift that also take into consideration your personal circumstances and the needs of your heirs.

RMHC of Greater Chattanooga gratefully accepts estate gifts, securities or other properties, life insurance and retirement savings from estate plans. Donations through estate plans are placed in our Endowment Fund and the principal amount of the donation is preserved and never spent. The interest from the growth of the investments is used for the daily operations of the Ronald McDonald House and Family Room. If you’re considering an estate gift to our organization, we strongly suggest that you discuss your wishes with your legal and financial advisors. A free Wills Workbook is available upon request and can assist you in communicating your wishes to your advisors. (Click here to upload form)

Frequently asked questions about estate gifts

1. What is the easiest way to include Ronald McDonald House Charities® in my estate?

The most simple, straightforward way to leave a planned gift is through your will. After consulting with family members and your legal and/or financial advisors, a brief statement in your new will or a codicil to your existing will makes your wishes known. The gifts (bequests) made by a will can include an amount of money, certain securities or other property, or a specified percentage of your estate. You retain full use of the assets during your lifetime. After providing for family and friends, you can choose to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chattanooga.

2. Can I make a gift of Life Insurance to Ronald McDonald House Charities®?

Yes! You may assign a fully paid, whole life policy to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chattanooga. You are entitled to an income tax charitable deduction for approximately the cash surrender value of the policy or its cost, whichever is less. You may also retain ownership of the policy, but may name RMHC as the beneficiary. Although an immediate income tax charitable deduction will not be available, estate taxes may be reduced because of a charitable tax deduction.
You may also purchase a gift of life insurance naming the RMHC as the owner and beneficiary. This strategy may increase the amount of the gift you can make. An income tax deduction is available for the amount of the premium if the premium is paid to RMHC and in turn, we'll make the premium payment due.

3. What is an endowed gift?

An endowed gift is a gift that RMHC® holds in perpetuity. A portion of its average annual investment return is used for purposes specified by you, the donor. The investment return is added to the principal, so that the principal maintains the original gilt that was endowed. Therefore, the House can utilize your gift for years to come.

4. What exactly is a Charitable Gift Annuity?

Charitable gift annuities-Perhaps the most frequently promoted form of planned giving following bequests, charitable gift annuities are simple in concept. In exchange for your contribution to RMHC®, we promise to pay you (or an annuitant named by you) a specific amount annually for life. This amount may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually, and is most commonly determined by utilizing the charitable gift annuity rates recommended by the American Council on Gift Annuities. You can view these rates at www.acga-web.org.

5. Will my retirement savings be taxed if I leave it to charity?

No! Leaving your retirement savings to RMHC® will benefit our House 100%, as it will not be taxed by Uncle Sam. If the savings are left to your family then the total amount will incur heavy taxes. This is one of the simplest and most outright gifts you can leave to your favorite charity.
